Urgent Action: Let Rene go home - write to Obama today

Campaign News | Friday, 7 October 2011

Rene Gonzalez, one of the Miami Five, unjustly imprisoned in US prisons for trying to stop terrorist attacks against the Cuban people, is released from prison today, Friday 7 October.

But Rene is not free. He must serve a further three years in the US on probabtion, despite the fact that his wife, children and family all live in Cuba, and under threat from the anti-Cuba terrorist organisations based there.

This is an extra and cruel punishment imposed by the US on Rene, who has already spent thriteen years without his wife being granted a visa, and in jail following a trial whose fairness has been questioned by Amnesty International and the United nationals Council on Arbitary Detentions.

By forcing Rene to remain in the US, his life is in danger from the very anti-Cuba terrrorist organisations that he was in the country to infiltrate. Furthermore, inflamatory statements for US Congresswoman Lleana Ros-Lehtinen calling hm an "enemy of America" further threaten his safety.

Please write to President Obama requesting he intervene in this case today. Use the model letter below or write in your own words:

Dear President Obama

Please allow Rene Gonzalez to return home to his family in Cuba

I am writing to ask you to intervene in the case of Rene Gonzalez, who was release from Mariana prison on 7th after serving 13 years.

In September, Judge Joan Lenard issued an order which forces González to live in Florida on his release. Her decision also dictates certain conditions of parole, including prohibiting him “from associating with or visiting specific places where individuals or groups such as terrorists, members of organizations advocating violence, organized crime figures are known to be or frequent..."

His lawyer, wife and mother are concerned for his safety if he is forced to stay in the US alongside the very Miami based terrorists he was monitoring who have never been prosecuted and remain free in Florida.

His safety is also threatened by the inflammatory statements from Cuba-born Florida Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen who called Gonzalez an "enemy of America" with “blood on his hands”, just days before his release.

I urge you to intervene in this case and allow Rene to return to Cuba, rather than be forced to stay in Florida, which would not only be cruel but potentially threatening to his safety. Amnesty International has already raised concerns about the fairness of his trial, and the inhumane punishment he is being subjected to by being denied visits from his wife.

I ask that you intervene to ensure the safety of René González and the best way to do this would be to send him home to his family in Cuba.

Yours sincerely
