Cuba to host 11th World Sports For All Congress

Nearly a thousand sports experts have now registered for the 11th World Sports For All Congress set to run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 in Cuba's capital, Havana, Jose Ramon Fernandez, who leads Cuba's Olympic Committee told Monday's Cuban daily newspaper "Worker".

Cuban organizers hope to see triple the 369 delegates seen at the Rome's 10th edition of the Congress. The meeting will also host sports science students from the Latin American School of Medicine and the International Schools of Physical Education and Sports, both based in Havana.

Fernandez said the Cuban Committee hopes that the Cuban Congress will serve as a benchmark for future Congresses. The 11th edition, titled Benefits and Challenges of Physical Activity, will be the first attended by United Nations Science and Culture Organization representatives.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, Jacques Rogge, has registered alongside 31 IOC colleagues, including the Sport For All Commission president, Walther Troger, who is set to arrive on Oct. 30.

There will also be five presidents of international sporting discipline ruling bodies: those for soccer, cycling, swimming, weightlifting and modern pentathlon. The first Congress was held in Frankfurt, Germany in 1986.
